# Ratings and reviews

Members can rate a shop out of five and leave a review. The average appears on the shop page and on tiles in the directory, and **Best rated** becomes a sort option.

### Switching it on

`Settings` → `General` → **Shop reviews**.

Only **signed-in members** can rate or review. That is not configurable, and it is the reason this stays usable — an anonymous rating box on a cashback site fills with spam within a week.

### How it works

Reviews are ordinary WordPress comments on the shop page, with a rating attached. That means your existing moderation queue, spam filtering and comment settings all apply, with nothing new to learn.

A member can leave one review per shop.

### Moderating

`Comments` in WordPress, as usual. Reviews on shop pages appear alongside your post comments.

Your normal comment settings decide whether reviews appear immediately or wait for approval. **Holding the first review from each member is the sensible setting** on a site where money is involved.

An unapproved review does not count toward the shop's average.

### The average

Calculated from approved reviews only, and kept up to date as reviews are added, approved or deleted.

Shops with no reviews have no rating and simply show nothing — they are not shown as zero stars, which would read as a bad rating rather than no rating.

### Should you switch it on?

**Yes, if** you have enough members to produce reviews. Shop reviews are genuinely useful to visitors and give you page content you did not have to write.

**Not yet, if** you are just starting. A directory of 400 shops with no reviews anywhere looks abandoned. Come back to it once you have members.

{% hint style="info" %}
Reviews are about the **shop**, not about your cashback. Members will use them to complain about cashback anyway — a declined order, a slow payout. Expect it, and answer publicly: the reply is read by everyone else considering that shop.
{% endhint %}

### Turning it off later

Existing reviews are kept, hidden rather than deleted, and reappear if you switch it back on. Nothing is lost.
